Day 1: Vision for the New Year

The new year has started. It is 2024 now, and I have been thinking a lot about how I want this year to unfold. The reason for that is that the last quarter of 2023 has been very hectic for me. I didn’t like that, and it did stress me out more than I should have allowed it to. Something good also happened because of it: I started to think about how I want 2024 to unfold, and what goals I would like to reach. Normally I would stay far away from New Year’s Resolutions, but this time I want to give it a go. Since people give up on their New Year’s resolutions quite fast though, I decided to call this my vision for the new year.

1. 366 days of writing blogs

2024 is a leap year, so we have one more day to reach our goals this year. One of the things I have been thinking a lot about in the remainder of 2023, is what I would like to write for this site. I made the plan to start writing in English instead of Dutch already. The problem was that I just couldn’t figure out what to write about. Recently I have been reading Be Useful by Arnold Schwarzenegger, and somewhere in the beginning of the book he talks about starting with a big plan, and narrow it down as you proceed with it. That is what I am going to do with my texts for this site as well. This year I want to write daily blogs. That’s it. My niche will develop as I continue to write every single day.

2. Meditate daily

I like to meditate. It eases my mind, and calms me down again. Recently I started meditating again, but not daily. The only times I am doing a meditating session now, is when I feel I really need it. It is like people using medicine after they got sick, only then to realize that they probably wouldn’t have gotten sick if they would have a healthier lifestyle. So I shouldn’t use meditating as a medicine for stress, but as a prevention to stress. That is why I also decided that I will try to meditate daily from today.

3. Drink 2 liters of water each day

In the past there have been times that water was almost the only thing I drank. Nowadays my drinking diet mostly consists out of coffee and healthy juices, even though I also don’t drink a lot of the last one. For my own health it seems like a good idea to me to start drinking water way more often again. Looking at my bodyweight, I should drink between 2 and 2.5 liters of water each day. It doesn’t seem that hard to me to start drinking more water again. It is just something that needs to become a habit again.

4. Read 20 books (also less screen time)

This year I have been looking to screens way too much time. At my work I look a lot to computer screens, to then also start watching tv (or play videogames) when I get home. It was my plan to read 40 books last year, but I didn’t even reach 50% of that goal. That is why I am combining two goals together as one. When I start reading more again, I will also stop looking at screens as much as I did last year. I already have quite some books I still need to read, so that will all work out fine. Normally I would also start a Goodreads Reading Challenge each year, but I don’t know if I want to do that this year. I think I will just keep track of my reading goal myself.

5. More walks outside

I really like to walk outside. It is refreshing, healthy, and it kind of has the same effect as meditating when it comes to easing my mind. Something that also always seem to happen when I am going for a walk, is that I am getting inspired to do stuff. Even though I really like to go for a walk, I don’t do it as often as I would like. Time and energy are the main reasons for that. So if I just figure out when it is the best time to walk, and maybe even plan my walks ahead, I think I will really go for more walks again.

Even bigger plans on my mind

While the five above are more like your regular New Year’s resolutions, I also have way bigger plans on my mind. I know for sure that I will start to travel more again, and mostly with the mindset of discovering new places. I also have some ideas for some big projects, but those are still in their first drafts, so I will share more about those when they are starting to get more concrete. For now I think it is important that my five New Year’s resolutions are in line with my vision for this year, and maybe even with my vision for the coming years.
