Accountability

I believe that one of the most important traits to have, is a sense of accountability. You are responsible for the actions you take. You are responsible for how you react to situations. Recently I started noticing that a lot of people lack this trait. They like everything being handed to them, and being treated like they are the only one who matters. This is not a generational thing though. I think it’s more a characteristic of this time. People like to hold others accountable for what they do, but they don’t hold themselves accountable for their own actions and reactions. I really believe that in this day and age, people should really develop their sense of accountability.

You cannot always control what happens to you, but what you can control, are your actions and reactions to whatever happens. This is a big part of accountability. You are the one who is to be held accountable to shape your life to what you want. Don’t confuse this with forcing your own will to achieve whatever you want. I think a part about accountability is also that you hold yourself accountable for how others react on your actions and reactions. That can also be because of something wrong you did. When you know that you did something wrong, then also really think about your reactions to the reactions of others. Sometimes that means that you just need to suck it up, and accept how people act on your actions and reactions. That possibly is the hardest thing to do for someone without a sense of accountability.

As soon as you develop a high sense of accountability, it can also create a form of freedom. It is good to think that you stand at the base of your own development, and that you’re the one who is accountable for how you improve yourself. Want to become the best version of yourself? Start with developing a sense of accountability. Start holding yourself accountable for your actions and reactions. Don’t immediately start to blame others, and read the situation you’re currently in. Sometimes that means that you need to suck it up, but it could also mean that you will reap the fruits of your actions. The important thing is though, that you will hold yourself accountable for both results.

Of course I have my reasons for writing this blog, but one way or another it always comes back to people having that sense of accountability, or not. Sometimes it really baffles me how vain people can be, when they are being held accountable for something they did. That they then still not understand that there will be reactions to their actions, surprises me time after time. I have the feeling that the lack of accountability really is something that has developed during recent years. It is of course really easy to blame the lockdowns for this, and not in the spirit of holding yourself accountable for your own actions and reaction, but I really have the feeling it is something that has developed during those years. Maybe it is just a feeling, I don’t know. It is also not important. Like I said, everyone should be held accountable for their own actions, and not blame someone or something else.

As soon as you develop a high sense of accountability, it can also create a form of freedom. It is good to think that you stand at the base of your own development, and that you’re the one who is accountable for how you improve yourself. Want to become the best version of yourself? Start with developing a sense of accountability.
