Change is the only constant in life. Acknowledge and embrace that fact, and your mind will probably be much calmer. You experience the changes in the world, because there is a part of you that never changes. When you know what that part is, you will know who you really are. This is what I’ve read in the book Find Your Inner Strength by Swami Purnachaitanya. It’s a book about how meditation may help you in this ever-changing world. The above part is from the first chapter, and it already kinda opened my eyes to some things. All these things we learned from the societies point of view, that we deem important, won’t be immune for change. So why do we value those things so much? All these events that have been happening in the world, from pandemics to climate change to even war, showed us that in the end a lot of things don’t matter a lot. Would it be an idea to question if we are going the right way with the economic and technological progression? Should we start looking inward more?
The amount of people dealing with a burn-out is increasing fast every single year. In the Netherlands, people who called in sick because of stress related reasons, increased with 8.5% the last year. It is hard to pinpoint an exact reason on why this happens. Because we are now living in a society, of which a lot of people are glued to the screen of their phones, everyone has the power to instantly feed themselves with a lot of information, negative and positive. Social media feeds, news apps, and for most of us even work-apps, take care off providing us with all this information. We get an information overload, which just can’t be good. Recently the world has been flooded with bad news. So I don’t think it’s weird that people get overwhelmed, burned out, and even depressed, because of this overload of negative information. This adds up to things that are happening in our ” normal life” .
I really believe that, if it wasn’t for the information overload that we are receiving, it would be way easier to deal with the stuff, negative and positive, that’s happening in our non-digital lives. Of course we can only look to ourselves when we use apps personally, but I think businesses should also stop expecting that people are always available. Time off means time off. Don’t say that people are allowed to not respond to your call or request. You shouldn’t even call at all when it is not really important. The only thing important enough, is something that really can’t wait until tomorrow. Everyone knows what can be important enough.
But back to the first part of this blog. The reason why we should be looking inward more, is because that little part of ourselves that never changes, the part which makes us really know ourselves, could be the fix for a more stable mind. This will benefit our overall mental health as well. A lot of these external changes don’t even really matter anyway. They are not immune to change, and will inevitably change in a period of time. But that is also the case with things we see as positive. Take our phones for example. Today your phone could be the most technological advanced one, but next year it is possibly outdated again. Today you’re happy with it, next year probably less. Nothing is immune to change. When we start acknowledging that, and know how to deal with that, it would make everyone more mentally stable. I believe in what Swami Purnachaitanya says, and that we will find that answer by looking inside.
Let’s find that part of us which never changes, which make us who we are. Then we can start building the strength to deal with whatever life throws at us. That doesn’t mean everything will become easy, but at least everything will change again other than that strong part of you which never changes.
